The best way is to go to a site with lots of different companies; like this one http://www.cheap-airfares-1.com/ and compare prices.

A few minutes of searching (making sure you include heavyweights like expedia and kayak) will turn up the dirt cheap airline tickets you're after...of course, it will depend how you define "dirt cheap" :)

Try sidestep.com They use over 120 search engines to give you the best deal. I have saved SO much money since I found it!

kayak.com, or if you really want cheap airfare be a courier, you have to take something in place of your check in bag

The best place is http://www.ryanair.com if 1 penny for airfare is dirt cheap enough for you.

it totally dependes where you want to go.

If it is in within the USA, www.southwest.com and jetblue or as the other people suggested kayak and sidestep

If it is within western europe, Ryan Air, EasyJet and Vueling.com are the place.

It is someplace else, expedia, sidestep and kayak.

I think that once you know your route, try to find which airlines fly there and then do a price seach, because as an example Southwest Airlines will not come out in kayak or sidestep, you have to book directly on their site.

Also, find alternate airport where these airlines may fly. As an example, Southwest doesnt fly to SF it flies to Oakland.

In summary, there is no one site that gives you everything, you just need to shop around but 1st know what you are looking for.....
