Yes there is. I had a dog a long time with severe allergies. I had the blood work done and I chose to give my dog weekly injections over a several month period to desensitize her for the allergens that were affecting her. I will say that this was expensive and this was over 10 years ago. The procedure worked about 75 %.
I will say that I have learned so much about pet food over the years. There are several ingredients in our pet food that contribute to allergies like wheat, corn, soy, chemicals, preservatives to name a few. Some pets when taken off of these ingredients get better all on their own.
The unfortunate thing is most of your commerical grade pet foods contain these ingredients and are labeled "Premium" . These ingredients shouldn't be in our pet food at all. Trying to chose a brand that doesn't contain them is definately a difficult task but highly recommended. In fact that is why there is a massive law suit against Science Diet, Pro Plan, Iams, Eukanuba, Pedigree and thousands of others. They are being sued for misrepresentation in to letting the consumer think that these products are good for our pets. They are so wrong and that is the reason for the law suit. I am directly invovled with this law suit so I know first hand.
Since I switched to a holistic brand of pet food I have seen a huge difference in my pets. I have not had any more problems since.
I can tell you one of my success stories. I have a shep mix, 9 yrs. old. failing hips. With the help of my vet's recommendation to switching him to the holistic food without the preservatives, chemicals, corn, wheat and all of the other stuff they shouldn't have. My shep mix doesn't even have pain any more. He acts years younger and to my belief my convential vet agrees that it was the food. I have been trying to eat healthy myself and for my pets. I thought by buying the Premium Brands of pet food like Iams, Pro Plan and Science Diet that I was doing well. This was all after my episode with my dog with allergies. I learned recently about a year ago that I was doing more harm to dogs and cats than good.
I have had a huge eye opener about pet food. I spent the time and effort to learn how it is made and what is good and what is not. Do you know that dead, diseased animals are ground up and put into most Premium Pet Foods? Plus the corn, wheat, soy and chemicals and preservatives. Do you know that those 3 brands that I just described need enough preservatives to sit in unfregierted semis for up to a year at time before being sold?
I didn't know these things until a year ago.
If I were you I would try to cut the corn, wheat, soy, preservatives and chemicals out of your pet food, do a little research and try that for your dog first. It certainly can't hurt. Good Luck and feel free to email me anytime.

Yes, there is. I had a golden retriever mix that had terrible allergies and we had to get him tested a couple of times. It's kind of pricey, but my baby was worth it! hehe! He was the best dog and I did pretty much everything for him...he lived to be around 15...not bad for a dog who had allergies AND thyroid problems! An allergic dog can be treated with allergy shots, just like a human would...once they have been properly diagnosed.

Yes, there are 2 methods I have used. One is the blood test and the other was a skin test. The blood test checks for a few allergies and the skin test is much more involved and checks for about 40 allergens. I used the blood test on my Rott and didn't get anything helpful so did the skin test. The dog's side is shaved and he is marked with about 40 dots, then injected with the allergens. They check for bumps I believe 24 hours later then 2 days later. My vet took the top offenders he would come into contact with, he was allergic to Ca. redwood but we live in Florida, and had a shot brew mixed up. I gave him shots daily for about a month then every other day etc until he was down to a shot every 4-8 weeks. It worked miracles on him, his coat looked better than his first 3 yrs and he only had 1 raw spot a year instead of several.

Depending on the severity of the dogs allergies, talk to your vet. Mine told me I could give my dog Benydryl.
