Doxycycline hyclate good to treat UTI?

Hi. I'm just curious if doxycycline hydrate is suitable to treat a UTI? If so, about how long should something like this be taken to fully cure a UTI? I know it can be used to treat certain infections, but I'm just wondering if a UTI would be one of them.

Thanks.

Additional Details

I was just wondering if I could take it because I took the home tests to see if I could possibly have a UTI and such...and it said I didn't have any nitrates or proteins. But...I've had UTI's before and it reallly feels as though I do have one. Guess I'll just go to the dr. so they can tell me no, too and give me some medicine *sigh*

It can be used if the infection is caused by Klebsiella species bacteria. So you would have to have a urinalysis to be sure. It doesn't do any good to treat if it won't work against whatever is causing the infection. Just builds up resistance and then if you need it, it won't do any good. Sorry, need to go to the doctor.

Thanks for the advice. I decided to play it safe and just go to the dr....and they indeed gave me something else!
Yes, it can work on the Klebsiella species, as well as E. Coli which is the most common. However, I always suggest to my patients to play it safe and come in for a urinalysis. I can send the urine sample out for Culture and Sensitivity to see what it is absolutely sensitive to.
