Trying to settle a dispute about flying from australia to america?

my cousin and I were talking about the quickest way to fly from australia to las vegas. she believes it would be quicker to fly from australia to ireland and then onto america or is there a quicker route? please help.

Direct via LA is the quickest the flight Sydney to LA is non stop and takes 13 hours then another hour to Las Vegas as opposed to 20 hours to London change 1 hour to Ireland then another 10 or 12 to vegas
