If you mean nice as in pretty u could try carlton or richmond or yarraville
if you mean nice as in low crime rates thats relatively uncommon for middle class suburbs(unless they are made by delfin ssuch as caroline springs)

Prahran, South Melborune, Middle Park, Albert Park, Port Melbourne, North Melbourne and Caufield are all really nice middle class suburbs that are close to the city with beaches, parks, public transport and shops near by.

The two most expensive suburbs in Melbourne are Toorak and Eaglemont. Both are beautiful though I would put these in the 'upper class' category. Ivanhoe and North Balwyn are lovely middle class suburbs that are well established as are Mont Albert, Surrey Hills and Canterbury. You won't go wrong with any of these. If you like being closer to the beach you can also give Brighton a look in.

With google maps and google earth you can do a virtual walk through these areas.

Essendon, Strathmore, Keilor, Moonee Ponds in the North, Aspendale, Carrum Downs in the SE. Nothing in the West where you would want to live.
