Is this symbolism in english literature?

Hi, I was just wondering if this would be considered as a symbol in literature.
If in a book somone says "I can't play sports", or "I suck sports", and the author is trying to suggest that some parents, in trying to educate their kids, actually limit them from many possibilities, would the sentences the child says "I can't play sports" be a symbol to illustrate the lack of independence some children have, as a result of their parents? This is just a random example. I was just wondering what would happen in this case.

In some cases, but I wouldn't call that symbolism.

Hmmm. Not really a symbol, more like a metaphor for the modern dependance on others and higher beings.

Not really...That is more of a much more literal expression of feelings about a skill set or self worth.
