My husband's mother passed away January 2012 My husband was willed certain monies such as from the sell of the family house and checking accounts. My husband wants to file jointly this year, but on the surface I don't think this is a good idea. I would think that the liability of having that much money that was not taxed during the course of the year would increase our liabilities and the refund would not be as much as last year or any refund at all. I say he should file married but not jointly to account for the liability for the money that he is benefiting from from his family. He says we should file jointly. I would only agree if he takes care of the liability of the monies he has inherited. Is filing jointly or married seperately the best in this case to maximize refund amount? Thanks in advance! ** If you say the refund amount will not be affected by money being claimed from the sell of their family house or in a checking account - please give tax explanation as to why it would not affect refund - thanks! **

He stated that nearly all 2/7s have been scheduled for a DD on 2/1 and the ones that havent have errors, flag or whatnot. they completed most yesterday and the rest today... ...mine just finished processing today and it had been stating 2/7 without change since the 19th when it showed up. SOOO he also said that oddly (and even the IRS doesnt understand why) they had done the first few scheduled DDs that never went through (that we all heard about) and when they "fixed" it so they could be DDed somehow they fixed it too well and some of the deposits have been going in early ( some people scheduled for 1/30) So it might end up being there before hand because they are not trying to correct the early DDs going out because they have too much else to worry about..... OK so I think thats about it... GOODLUCK! your welcome :) -Lashonda (Hope I spelled that right) You may have it earlier I have read of a bunch of people getting there 1/30 and 1/31 refunds scheduled for today and tomorrow... Dont get too excited cause I cant make that promise... thats just what I have been reading...

Just curious if you're wondering about it. Yep, that's my question. But since I'm at it, let me address a few things you might find of interest. There has been a lot of confusion about what's going on. I used to be an IRS phone collection representative and I have many friends who still are. Here's what I know to be true: WMR, the refund hotine, and the cell phone apps all access the same database. Until it says that your direct deposit is scheduled for a specific date or indicates a particular error code, the information it presents is subject to change. If you call the IRS you could receive one of these reponses to your refund question: 1. "We are processing your return but a direct deposit date has not been scheduled. Normal processing time is three weeks" 2. "There has been a delay processing your return" (with possibly an explanation why). 3. "You are scheduled to receive your direct deposit on _____. If you're fortunate to get that response, it's a done deal unless you put the wrong bank information on your return." Phone reps are instructed NOT to speculate about reasons a refund may be delayed, but some do. This only adds to the confusion. Most of the current processing delays are a result of the need to "fine-tune" the fraud detection program the IRS uses to prevent fraudulent refunds from going out. (The IRS is understandably reluctant to give more details so as to not give the crooks information about how it works). The delays could be 1 or 2 weeks, but even so, the IRS expects the refunds to go out within the normal processing time. Even though refunds can very well be issued in less than 10 days (a friend had hers on the 20th!) the IRS never guarantees a specific date. I've seen some posts here complain that the IRS charges penalties and interest when they don't pay or file on time, but the IRS can take all the time it wants to send them their money. Hogwash. The IRS gives you FOUR MONTHS to file and pay. Even a mailed return without direct deposit only takes 6-8 weeks. Yes, many of us could use that money. In fact, this is the first year I can remember that I didn't need the money as soon as I could get it. So while I very much appreciate the frustration, its simply not fair to vilify the IRS and its employees for not getting you the money a week or two earlier. And keep in mind that many of you are receiving large refunds due to the earned income tax credit. This is free money. Try to be patient and realize that the IRS and its employees are working as hard as they can to get refunds out timely. Josh - Probably. I would have asked "Do you see a TC846 on the account?" (That's IRS jargon. If he says yes, then it's a done deal). Edward - Yeah, that info is there, but so is a lot of misinformation as well--some coming from IRS employees. Kristin - picky, picky :). As far as the refund goes, good point--but many folks don't have a tax liability at all and never had any taxes withheld, or they did and it was covered by the child tax credit. These folks look forward to the additional tax credit and EIC, which for many can be a large percentage of their year income. Goofy - Thanks. As for the weekend, the IRS computers never sleep and they do most of the work. The folks that maintain the systems also work, fortunately. As far as when and how WMR updates, I've never figured out how that works.

I asked him if that was reliable information and he just repeated himself like a recording. So I asked if my refund had finished processing or if that was just a projected date and he said, "Your refund will be..." I tried asking again and he just kept repeating himself. Finally he said, "It will be processed and deposited on February 3rd." I talked to someone else today who wouldn't even look me up and just said, "You can check the status of your refund at irs.gov." I asked her if that was reliable now and she said yes. My refund was accepted on 1/18 before 11am and wmr has always said and still does say the generic expect by 2/7. What is everyone else getting told that is in the same boat with the 2/7 on wmr (the regular one, not the one with processing delays). Are they saying the 3rd as a buffer and it's really 2/1 Wednesday or 2/3 Friday?? Or??? I know all we can do it wait and no one knows for positive, just curious what the word is! Thank you for all the great answers and confirmations guys!! I was scared that I would get a bunch of sarcastic remarks :) Thanks and good luck to everyone!!

I've been reading all these forums and checking WMR and it's just been saying the same thing about receiving my refund by January 31st. Now, I spoke with Hank and he was very helpful and I told him my concerns with all these forums and my DD not being there today and talking with Chase bank saying they had no DD. He said that since I filed early and was in the landing zone of the DD on the 25th (today) that the IRS has had a "glitch" and that I would have to refile my taxes through either my tax preparer or my online software (freetaxusa.com). I'm not too sure what to do but I think I'll wait till tomorrow and see if anything comes in and then go from there. If anyone else has gotten this claim please respond! @ Ms Fat- Yes he said due to the glitches in the system that has caused all of this that I would "have" to refile... @ Misty-Yes, this is the first time I've read something or heard of this having to happen so I'm gonna wait till tomorrow AM and call them if nothing has been deposited...I will be sure to repost any info that I get ASAP. @ Curious T-Ya he directly told me to contact my online tax preparer- FreeTaxUsa.com and ask them to refile my return...I then asked him again to make sure that I had to in order to get my return. @PADLTJ5-Yes I'm not going to refile until I don't see anything and talk to more IRS agents but was wondering if anyone else has gotten this response from an agent. Mine says the same thing about processing and by Jan 31st.

Kind of counting on the refund, though I know many of you will say to have patience or have more taxes taken out during the year, etc., but I just want a little peace of mind, especially considering it is the weekend. I also did read that the IRS is doing deposits Mon.- Fri, so I was wondering if my chances are good of receiving it sometime this week? Thanks :)

Each year there is much confusion over exactly when we will receive our income tax refund. This is understandable, as there are a number of factors that can affect it. The good news is that beginning this year all direct deposits will be issued 4 business days after the return posts. But what does "posts" mean? When you efile your return the IRS software determines if it can be processed. If so, it is considered "accepted." If not, it is rejected and has to be resubmitted after the corrections have been made. This determination usually takes about 24-48 hours after efiling, but it can vary either way. Once it is accepted, the return is processed. This takes about a day unless there are other issues that arise. If there are, the "Where's My Refund" application on the IRS web site will give a 4 digit reference number. The definitions can be found here: http://www.irs.gov/irm/part21/irm_21-004... Once the return has been processed, it "posts" to your account. This means that the information is available to be viewed on the IRS computers. For most of the past 50 years or so, information posted to accounts on a weekly basis. However, the IRS has implemented a new system that allows daily posting of transactions for most accounts. This means that a refund for a typical efiled return with no issues should be made in less than a week. For example: A return is accepted on the 17th and posts on the 18th. The DD would be 4 business days later on the 24th. Some conditions require the information to be posted on the weekly schedule. This include accounts using an ITIN, a foreign address, collection issues within the past two years, and a few others that can be found here at paragraph 5: http://www.irs.gov/irm/part3/irm_03-030-... Here are some points to keep in mind: ** The refund cycle calendar on the IRS web site is based on WEEKLY posting. This means that for most of us, our direct deposit will likely occur prior to the date on the calendar. This is why some folks are getting a date of 1/24 on WMR when the earliest date on the calendar is 1/25. ** In years past, the DD date was always on a Friday. Now, it can be any week day (M-F). ** WMR initiatlly gives a "received by" date corresponding to the Tuesday following the week the DD will actually be made. This is why it shows 1/31 and 2/7 for many of us so far. It is updated as the actual date gets closer. ** The date that WMR shows the DD will actually be made is the date the bank is directed to make the funds available. In reality, the funds are sent 1-2 days before that date. This is why some receive their refunds prior to that date. A few banks--usually online banks such as Meta Bank--make the funds available immediately. I hope this helps. Melissa - Yes, more than likely. This would put you on the weekly processing schedule and you would follow the chart found here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p2043.pdf... Kandy - Don't rely on WMR as you could very easily receive it prior to the 1st. the problem is that we don't know if your return is subject to daily or weekly processing. Girls love girls - Give it time. As long as your return has been accepted, its in the pipeline. Sometimes I think WMR is more trouble than it's worth! Salutor - Yes, and quite possibly a little earlier. MarineMom - Thanks for the comments. As I mentioned to Kandy, we don't know when your particular post date will be. Whenever it is, the DD is 4 business days from it. If you currently have a date of 2/7, it won't be any later than 2/1 and possibly earlier. Chris - It's 4 days from the posting date, not the accepted date. This is the unknown, but for many should be only a day or so after the accepted date. If not, the refund cycle chart applies. By the way, I used to be an IRS telephone representative until recently so I'm very familiar with the processes and how to read the Internal Revenue Manual. crazelilellie - You should get it no later than 1/25 and possibly earlier, provided there are not other issues. As far as WMR is concerned, it tends to be quirky. I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Kristi - Mine was accepted on the 17th and WMR shows 1/31. Although now, it shows nothing. I expect it to be updated Monday. ? - WMR often updates with the actual DD date on the same date of the DD, or sometimes even afterwards! Ryan - If WMR said the DD was scheduled for 1/24, I'd bank on it. Don't be concerned that it isn't showing anything now. This has to do with how the program interacts with IRS computers, which are down at certain times. Bunnun - How and when WMR updates is a mystery. The web site itself says to check back weekly on Wednesdays, but that's probably just to keep folks from always checking. It obviously updates all the time, based on my experience and that of many here. Ryan - Thanks for the comments. This is always such a confusing topic and I wanted to help make it a bit clearer. Nicole - Done. Mallory - The unknown here is whether or not your return is subject to daily or weekly posting. Most people are on the daily schedule beginning this year. If so, your refund could come earlier than what is stated on the refund cycle chart. In your case, if your return was accepted by 11 a.m. on the 18th, the DD should occur on the 25th at the latest, provided there are no other issues with your return or account. As for WMR, it clearly updates on a daily basis as many have already seen it change to a 1/24 DD date, Tenako - Not sure about that. Does anything show on WMR yet? AJG - Yes, I would think so. millenium_ryan - Hard to say. If WMR gives a "received by" date of 1/31, you should get it by the 25th. Ash Hearne - My situation is the same. I do expect to get the deposit tomorrow, though, in spite of WMR. In years past it often updates on the same day the deposit shows up--or even later! aj - If WMR or the phone says processing, it has been accepted. Danielle - Same here, but as I noted above, WMR often updates on the date of the deposit, or even afterwards.
