How do you record business expenses for taxes and how do you know what to leave off? Last year I set up my DJ equipment a couple times for practice and one time I set up for a free birthday party. I think most of the equipment was purchased last year but I wasn't allowed any deductions on my 2016 taxes because I didn't make any money other than my W2 from my full time job in that year. 2017 was the same except I did one show that I didn't get paid for. Starting this year, I was asked to run Karaoke one night a week. It won't pay much, I was offered $50 per night but I'm going to ask for $100 because I have expenses I have to cover. The most confusing expense is a cell phone because I want a separate number that I give out at events, I can take it with me when I'm out and I can shut it off when I don't want to be bothered. I have a phone that I use for personal calls. First there's the purchase price of the phone then there's the monthly bill. They have different plans, one you pay $80 upfront for the phone and $40 per month. You can also get a free phone and pay $50 per month for a year or two years depending on the cost of the phone. Then there's $400 phones vs. $80 phones. I could buy a Staighttalk prepaid phone for $15 and $25/Mo. which might be all I need. How would I then prove the phone was only used for business? If all I get is this one gig at $50/night I would be project to make around $2,000 to $2,600 for the year and $3,000 in expenses.

At my retail job, this woman always scams us with returns. She buys an expensive item and a similar looking cheap item from the same brand, switches the tickets, and when we look up the ticket in our system, it actually matches the item, so we’re forced to take it back! How do we outsmart her?

Best answer: You cannot accurately evaluate an employee’s performance unless you have a system to measure that performance. The first step is developing perfor- mance standards and goals in writing for each employee . Once a year each employee must be formally evaluated in a WRITTEN performance appraisal . In a face-to-face meeting, let the employee know what you think they did well and what areas the employee may be able to improve. Be specific, give deadlines, be honest, and be realistic.
One of our employees filed a lawsuit against the company because of comments a supervisor allegedly made during a performance evaluation . This did not have to happen and we will do better .
