Best answer: I'm American and have lived overseas. In Japan, we were told that tipping was an insult to the servers. They are salaried professionals. The service we received was always excellent, which eliminates the ridiculous argument that tipping is the only reason servers give good service. I've had similar experience in Europe. Servers are professionals and treated as such, and they behave such. There is pretty much no abuse of servers by customers.

The US needs to move to a system where waiting tables is recognized as a real job. They should unionize, get benefits, and get paid minimum wage or higher. Management also needs to step up and make sure customers behave appropriately.

  • Two people come into the cafe where I work with outside drinks and don’t but anything’s what should I do?

They sit for a couple hours, chat, than leave there stuff on the table for me to clean. It’s a smaller local cafe so we don’t know what to do or have a policy.

  • Is there something intrinsically wrong with being served food at a table that you're sitting at by some sort of waiter?

Dining out needs to be more like the proletariat working class that support each other as a political class in which capitalism creates, and not like the disgusting bourgeois class that tips, or throws their change, at workers, if the workers please them satisfactorily.

I ran into this problem yesterday at 1:00 p.m. I walked into a restaurant and mistakenly asked for 2 sausage dinners because I wanted to make sure the guy understood I didn't want sausage subs. A half-hour later I go to pick it up and was told the price was $40, but I only had $20 on me because that's what the lunch special costs for the two meals and that's what I thought I ordered. The guy told me I ordered dinner and the portions are bigger and I had to pay $40. I told him I needed to get more money from my car, but I walked out and drove away with no food. I thought why would the guy think I wanted dinners at 1:00 p.m. in the afternnoon during the lunch special? Anyway, I know I handled it wrong, but what would be the right thing to do in this situation? I learned a good lesson, never order anything in a restaurant without pointing to the item on the menu.
