    Limiting reactants. There are several ways to handle limiting reactant problems. Most are looking for the amount of product when given the amounts of the reactants. Therefore, you could compute the amount of product using each reactant. The theoretical yield will be the lesser of the two and that will indicate the limiting reactant.

    Or, you can simply assume that one reactant reacts completely and compute how much of the other will react. If we start with sulfamic acid and then compute the mass of sodium nitrite which will react, then we can compare that to the actual amount of NaNO2 which is available.

    HSO3NH2(aq) + NaNO2(aq) --> N2(g) + NaHSO4(aq) + H2O(l)
    1.73g .................. 1.40g

    1.73g HSO3NH2 x (1 mol HSO3NH2 / 97.10 g HSO3NH2) x (1 mol NaNO2 / 1 mol HSO3NH2) x (69.0g NaNO2 / 1 mol NaNO2) = 1.23g NaNO2

    Since 1.23g of NaNO2 is needed to react with all of the sulfamic acid, we can see that there is an excess of NaNO2, making HSO3NH2 the limiting reactant.

    As for the redox reaction which occurs:
