  • What do you think of the name Larissa?

Best answer: Unusual, probably get shortened to Larry, Lisa or Lara. Looks to me like a merger of Lara & Melissa. I don't personally like it, sorry

I've been thinking of making a Dark Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy series since I was 15, I'm now 20 and wondering where I should start in making this a reality. I have 9 arcs for it, do I write out the arcs and a book or what?

I'm writing a sad dramatic story set in the war period about a young guy who had an unlucky life and was tortured in prison. When he gets out he is a completely different person (detached, aloof and emotionless, he tries to forget what happened but the nightmares haunt him all the time). He flees and wants to go to Canada, but before that he goes to England to find out about his missing dad (who died years ago but he never actually knew he just imagined it). There he meets an Irish girl who falls for him, she's extremely clever and sensitive and feels like he's the one that understands her, because she's having a hard time at school (her classmates hate her because she's poor, she works too and she is more gifted than all the middle class and high society classmates she has there). She's outcast and lonely, even her family doesn't encourage her (her cousins are too focused on getting an english husband to keep her company or befriend her). He hides her lots of things and secrets and tries to push her away, because he feels like she deserves something better. Then she begs him to take her away and he helps her fleeing to canada but when they disembark the police finds him and forces him to go to first world war. She is pregnant with his child in a foreign country and cries all the time thinking something could happen to him. In the meantime he's having a hard time in war again, and he thinks of her all the time. I dont know how to make it end.

Best answer: You may be interested in "bringing him out" or "changing him" (clue: "introverted").

    Some possible approaches:

Share with him (co-read, it's meant that way) "For Couples Only" by Shaunti Feldhahn. For example, you might learn that a "cure" for his introversion is your genuine respect for him in little things, such as being willing to stand with him as he washes his car.

Otherwise, a gift certificate may give him freedom, but also it doesn't say a lot for your understanding him, and taking the time to select a thoughtful gift. Imagine, you present him with a clothing gift certificate for a tie--"Here, go buy yourself a tie;" or, you select a tie you find matches his eyes, or complements his favorite suit (ok, ties and suits are often far removed from many people's lives at present, but the analogy is clear, yes?). Because you selected the tie, he'll remember you when he wears it (or reads the book :-)

That's why Shaunti's book is so helpful (she has others, e.g. "The Kindness Challenge: Thirty Days to Improve Any Relationship"), as you're sharing some time together, guided by someone who has researched and cares about healthy, improving relationships.

Your question indicates you're not sure about good authors "for men;" Shaunti's book may bring insight into the female-male mystery.

As for good authors for men, depends greatly on the individual man.

If he likes adventure, "In a Sunburned Country" or "West with the Night" (usually rated one of the best 100 books of the last century; Hemingway's favorite nonfiction; he admired the writer, Beryl Markham).

If he likes fiction thrillers, Brad Thor is one of the best; "Code of Conduct," for example.

If he likes science, "A Fortunate Universe."

If he likes spirituality, "Autobiography of a Yogi" (rated one of the best 100 spiritual books of the 20th century), and "The Path of the Higher Self."

  • What is the most beautifully written book you’ve ever read?

Beautiful, not as in story, but as in the way the author structures and writes his sentences. For me it would have to be Lord of the Rings. What about you?

Best answer: In the days to which you refer women did not live very long - just long enough to be made pregnant many times and then they died of exhaustion. Those who did become an old maid had more chance of having a slightly more reasonable and slightly longer life but single women would have been treated as skivvies and, if not married with children, would be used as free servants by their parents.

In 21st century Britain the term is rather obsolete because many women choose not to be married and they have a fulfilling career even though many live with a man and have children. They pay heavily for child care and someone to do their household chores. Those who choose to not marry and to not have a family are no longer expected to care for aging relatives (although some still do that if they are the only offspring who has not married. I would not wish to put an age of what would be considered an old maid these days because no-one even thinks that way any more but, I am guessing, that the term might be used of any unmarried women over 40 by those who like to use that term to be insulting. When the term is used now it is usually said in a derogatory way with the intention of insulting. Women have choices these days, I am pleased to say.
