• Why do I have oval holes when using a drill?

Best answer: Your probably not drilling straight. Please consider using a drill guide jig. Very easy to make, take a piece of scrap wood (2″ x 4″, 1” x 4″ whatever 4″ to 6″ long) cut a 90 degree notch in one end. Place your drill bit in the corner of the notch and keep the bit parallel with the two sides. I’ve a $20 drill... show more

I’ve a $20 drill guide hanging on the wall of my shop, the notched 2″ x 4″ works better.

Also practice, practice, practice, practice, you will get the hang of drilling straight sooner or later.

Best answer: I assume we are talking oil wells. It can take from about a week to over a year. It depends on the depth and the complexity and the complications encountered.

Examples some are only a couple thousand feet, some are in excess of 20,000 feet and the depth makes time go exponentially with trips (pulling the drill string out and replacing it) to change out bits taking a very long time.

Some are straight and some are deviated and some are horizontal.

Some formations are very hard and progress (rate of penetration) is measured in a few feet per day. Bits wear out and have to be changed often when these conditions are encountered.

Sometimes the well caves in around the drill pipe. Sometimes the drill pipe get stuck. Sometimes there are pressure kicks or blow outs and sometimes there is lost circulation and all of these problems may take time to recover from and sometimes even back up and start over.

There are mechanical problems in the hole - dropped tools, broken tools, a broken pipe leading to fishing trips to get objects out of the hole before drilling can resume.

There are mechanical problems and maintenance with the rig.

  • Woke up to no heat yesterday. Was told it'd my automatic ignighter switch. If we have no heat, why do we have hot water?

Best answer: If you have a combi boiler and you get hot water but no heat then you likely have some type of control issue that a valve(s) is not opening, could be a thermostat, a control board or a stuck valve. If you have separate heating and water then it could be the igniter, but it could also be a failed control valve, a... show more

  • Why do American houses have so little lights?

They have like small bulbs on the ceiling and lots of table lamps. Why don't they just use fluorescent lights in every room? Won't that be much brighter? Is the electricity bill in US that expensive?

My wife and I spent $4700 in Lowe's on new appliances. We were able to take the over-the-range microwave and new electric oven. We get home and it took almost 4 hours to install the microwave as I had to tape up templates and deal with instructions that almost required a magnifying glass to read. Got the microwave up, then wheel the oven into the house. We got the plastic bands cut and box top off, and realized it was the wrong oven, the cheaper version of the one we paid for. Difference of $200. The model number was off by one number, so thus the reason for the mix up. What should I ask Lowe's to do? Will they give me any refund for the terrible inconvenience? We did not have plans to take back an oven and bring back the correct one. A total diversion of time we need to make sure our house is clean for Thanksgiving.

  • Can the heating element and the oven rack touch?

Best answer: It is not safe. Electric stove means electricity in that element and so easy to break. Get some heavy gauge and shape it a simple "S" hook; and if you look on the ceiling of the stove when it is cold you can see holes where the clips were. So hook your "S" hook into the hole and also hook it... show more

Why chance breaking the element ? That costs money. A pieces of wire is like free.

I haven't been able to find figures on the efficiency. Is 95%, 90% recovered? 80%? I know some evaporates while it sits in those filtering pools. But, even evaporated water eventually returns as rain.

How guilty should we really feel for running the tap for 45 seconds while we brush our teeth? Or fill a tub for a bath?
