  • C-section question?

I’m having my first baby by c-section and they’re going to cut me vertically, how big is a vertical cesarean incision & how much pain will I be in during the surgery? I hear it’s uncomfortable but I’m terrified I’ll be in a lot of pain while they’re cutting me open.

Best answer: The tricky part about PET scans is that although they're designed to find cancer, there are a lot of other things that cause the PET scan to light up and the radiologist and ordering doctor have to be very careful to distinguish what's lighting up because it's cancer and what's lighting up for some other (non-cancer) reason. In your case, the radiologist is saying some areas are lighting up but he or she doesn't think it's cancer. Let's take it bit by bit...

"1. Stable right posterior lower pleural thickening... likely benign" - the lungs have a pleural membrane that go around them and the membrane around the right lung has an area of thickening at the back ("posterior"). However this is not any different from the last time they looked ("stable") AND has an appearance on the test ("minimal increased FDG activity") that doens't look like cancer. Therefore the radiologist's OPINION is that this thickening is probably not cancer (ie not mesothelioma).

    2. "Mild increased uptake involving bilateral hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes likely inflammatory process" - the lymph nodes that sit in the hila of the lungs (where the air passages from the lungs join to form the trachea and the lymph nodes that sit in the mediastinum (the middle of the chest) are lighting up "mildly". To the radiologist it appears that this is due to inflammation (a cold or a bronchitis or other process) rather than cancer.

So the radiologist at least thinks it unlikely that there's cancer. You'll need to take the opinion of the doctor who ordered the test, however, to get a complete picture. Good luck!
