Best answer: Well to begin with there was your biological mother. I shall infer that like most humans in the West (you are likely in the West if you have time to post such frivolous questions) there were others present, e.g. an obstetrician, midwife, nurse, perhaps your father. So medical records and witness testimony would be a start. This would be supported by the fact that is the only way human beings come to exist. You may have been conceived in vitro and inserted into your mother's, or surrogate's, uterus or you may have been conceived by good old fashioned, messy sex. You were born intravaginally or by caesarean section. You offer no evidence to the contrary and did not even bother to think what evidence did exist for your very ordinary birth whilst thinking up these stupid questions.

  • Does science only deal with evidence and not proof?

Best answer: Science leaves open the chance that it might be wrong. However, as the evidence piles up, it becomes less and less likely that it is wrong. This is especially true when, over many years of experiment, observation, and use, not a single instance that it is wrong has been discovered.

A scientific theory (the highest reliability level) can be destroyed by the discovery of one single observation that it is wrong. Consider Newtonian Physics. For over 300 years it was shown again and again to be dead on accurate, then came the observation, the observed speed of light was a constant, unrelated to the motion of the instrument measuring its' speed. That one , confirmed observation, showed that Newton was a little off for things moving a significant fraction of the speed of light.

It should be noted that saying, "It (a theory) has not been proved and might be wrong." is not good enough to discount it. To attack a theory you must show the evidence that it is in fact wrong. i.e. It was not good enough to say, "Newton is wrong." You would have had to say, "Newton is wrong, BECAUSE we have evidence that it does NOT correctly deal with the speed of light." So, if you think a theory is wrong, show us the evidence on which that conclusion is based.

  • Does this statement prove evolution?

Best answer: You made a major error at the fourth word of your question. Proof is something left to mathematicians. It is impossible in science to prove anything. That always takes people sometime to accept because that is what they think scientists spend their time doing, i.e. proving things.

Science works with evidence and what it accepts is based on the preponderance of the evidence. However, sometimes certain facts are so strongly evidenced that scientists generally accept they are all but proven. For example, the evidence shows that in our solar system the Earth orbits the Sun. Technically, a scientist must remain sceptical and open to the possibility that one day this model of the solar system will be disproven. However, no rational scientist really expects this to happen. There are other areas of science that are generally considered to be all but proven in the same way such as the atomic theory of matter, the germ theory of disease, gravity AND evolution.

The information about the star that is so far away is not evidence, at all, of evolution. Where I think you are confusing things is that one of the arguments of many opponents of evolution is that there has not been enough time for evolution to occur. All this star can do is demonstrate that the universe must be old enough for evolution to be a possibility. However, there are stars in the universe that existed before the Earth did and so whilst a star may show the age of the universe it does not show the age of the Earth. There is, of course, a very large body of evidence that not only supports evolution but that shows the Earth is old enough to have provided the time for evolution to occur.
