Simple, the Republican Party has succesfully brainwashed a good chunk of the public to believe that their party is the party of "America" or "patriots". LOWER TAXES, TAKE OFF REGULATIONS, DRILL BABY DRILL, are all nice little slogans to make people think that their party is doing these things for them and the common folk, but in reality, each one of those policies benefit the oilgarchs and Wall Street CEO's much more disproportionally than average middle class Americans.
Lowering taxes may give us a little bit more money in our pockets, but they vastly outbenefit the super rich, or one percent, of the public. In fact, lowering taxes hurts average Americans because they are expected to pay back those deficits with actual tax increases or spending cuts for crucial programs, while the super rich are left with even lower taxes; thus creating a nation of great income inequality. Less regulation, they say, will allow you to build your business because there will be less restrictions for you. Well, that may be so, but its still relativley easy for anyone to start a business. But the true beneficiaries of lax regulation will be the conglomerates of the "too big to fail" banks and corporations who will be allowed to make risky loans and ratings which have the dangerously high possibility of creating a deep recession which will only hurt the average American. (A prime example would be the mess we are in right now.) And when their company goes under, the American tax payer would be expected to bail them out. Finally, the first six months of this year have been the hottest six months ever recorded for the US. There is a severe drought going on in the US and there has been record drilling under this president than from any other president. Yet the GOP still runs the idea of desperate drilling so we can have even more oil to burn off. You might get the feeling that they've helped you get lower gas prices, but once again, the people who will benefit the most from this will be the oil executives as Exxon and the Koch Brothers by reeking in record profits, and the true people who will pay the price will be the average citizen with hotter, costlier, and more dangerous summers. Yet the Republicans in charge will enjoy the luxury of recieving enormous donations from these same people for their re-elections.
I can go on. But you see, there is a reason why the Republicans seem so desperate to protect the ultra rich and elite, while at the same time, convince so many Americans that it is the "American" way to go. The Democrats may have have their flaws, but I'd rather see the government spend money for ordinary people like you and me, instead of spending it for the very well-off.
