Kaspersky is a good AV, if you are not worried about the allegations of Russian meddling with that company to insert hidden "hooks" into their product.
I use their stand-alone rescue disk. Without any network connection, and boot off a CD, there is no way it can "call home" to the KGB. It then does a good job of clearing some nasty viruses.
Search the Internet for AV ratinigs, there are many sites that review different AV products and rate their performance. Pick one of those (top 3) and you should be good to go.
Remember, no one AV product detects ALL viruses, there are always some viruses that do get through, even with the best AV product. A good third party firewall is necessary to prevent any virus from "calling home", and a Malware product is needed to keep you browsers (and system) free from malware. Viruses and Malware, though they do overlap a lot, are two totally different things, you need different software for cleaning both of those.
