I've lost count. My mother LOVED having animals in the house, so you could only imagine the losses we have had. Dogs, birds, rodents, fish, etc. The list goes on. But every single one of those animals was very well cared for and lived a rich, old life.
-Family wise, we've lost 3 dogs. The last was a Dalmatian and she was the just the sweetest thing in the world. It's been 9 years since and I still think about the silly things she used to do.
-Many rats over the years, all mine. Damn I miss them. I had one that knew how to steal money, open her cage (she could come and go as she pleased), and came when called. She lived to be a ripe old 4, which is pretty good for a common pet store rat :)
-And the latest one, a kitty. He didn't even make it to age 3. He got FIP my husband and I were heart broken. Happened back in October and I still can't believe it. He should be here, with us, still being his naughty little self and begging me for treats with his cute little kitten meow that he never seemed to grow out of and sleeping in the crook of my legs at night. I miss him SO much. I still can't look at an orange cat without my heart just aching...
It sucks, it hurts, but all you can do is cherish the memories and the time you had. When we decide to become pet guardians, in the back of our minds, we know they don't live forever no matter how much we wish it. It sucks even more when they didn't get the final years they SHOULD have had, all due to some freak disease or accident, and I think that makes it harder than having them die at a good, old age.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
