If, by "Sages" you mean the ones who wrote the Bible, then yes. That is quite clear. They got it wrong.
However, as far back as 2400 years ago (therefore, before the Bible was compiled), Greek philosopers and mathematicians already had a pretty good idea about the meaning of the constant we now call "pi". And they came up with quite accurate approximations for it.
