Yeh the opposite of baseline play is serve volley play. Some of the greatest serve volleyers in the modern era would be Rod Laver, John Mcenroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras, Pat Rafter and Pat Cash. Around about 2002 at Wimbledon they made a conscious decision to slow the conditions. They started using a thicker, coarser grass and started using lighter balls. The result is the ball bounces higher and means the base liners have more of a chance now at Wimbledon and it plays more like a hard court tournament now. And also indoor tournaments are virtually exclusively played on hard courts now where is back in the day in the 80s and 90s most indoor tournaments were played on fast rubber carpet courts. And players like McEnroe, Becker and Edberg had a lot of success indoors. But not these days.
