Why did I have to list everyone I live with for a background check?

I work in childcare (not one in my own home -- it's at a separate location, and it is not my own business) and so I have to have a background check done. On the forms, I was required to list everyone I live with and their birthdays despite the fact that they have nothing to do with my job and that the childcare isn't occurring in my own home or around them.

Just curious why it was required that I list them.

If you live with a half dozen sex offenders, that would be a problem.

Sometimes, the employees take the kids for a field trip or something.  They want to know the risk level.

Because a standard background check includes checking out the types of people you are involved with and whether that relationship poses a risk.  For example, if you live with a drug dealer or known criminal, that's a red flag.
