Plane lands in USA (San Francisco)

Passengers get off and proceed to Immigration and Customs for a check.

YOU will claim your luggage and take it past a Customs Officer.

After the check you return your luggage to the Airline there is a place in the Customs area most use.

YOU then exit the secure area of Customs and make your way to your next flight.

Allow at least 3-4 hours for a change of plane. Delays can happen in the lines.

It is the same rules for ALL AIRLINES.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking.  Are you flying into San Francisco from another country, then continuing on to LA?  If that's the case, you will go to Immigration and Customs (follow the crowd - everyone on your plane will have to go to the same place) and then will be able to enter the terminal to find the gate for your flight to LA.

If this is not what you're asking, then please clarify your question.

You get off the first plane. You ask the gate agent where your connecting flight will be and go to that gate. Most of united flights are on the same concourse or a short walk to the neighboring concourse

If I am reading your question correctly, it sounds as though you may be doing an international flight to San Francisco and connecting to Los Angeles.  If that is correct, then you need to go through customs and immigration.  You will also have to collect any checked luggage and then re-check them onto the domestic flight by going to the ticket counter at United Airlines.
