    They went behind the LEM.

    They used so-called condom catheters that ran the urine into a bag, which could then be removed for disposal. Originally, these condom catheters were labeled small, medium, and large, but all of the astronauts refused to use any size other than 'large'. They had to change the names of the sizes to large, huge, and humongous, in order to get the astronauts to use the correct size for their individual anatomy. 

    Please read the excellent book, "Packing for Mars" by Mary Rauche which discusses these issues. The chapter on how NASA dealt with female anatomy is particularly humorous.
