Why is stuff made out of iron?
So it can rust and corrode easily?

It has a high strength to weight ratio. Not as good as aluminum or maybe titanium. On a strength to cost basis it is one of the first choices for structural uses of all kinds. As for rust or corrosion. This can be prevented several ways from painting to alloying it with other more corrosive resistant metals.

Cause its strong. Most stuff that has iron has other elements in it and they call that steel. Real useful stuff. Lots of varieties for different applications.

Agree with many others in that cost is the main driver. It's pretty strong and can be made in huge quantities cheaply compared with other metals.
Compared with aluminum, it requires much less energy to make(environmental concerns) and also has a much higher melting point. Something to consider in high heat applications or where fire is a possibility.

You must mean steel. Steel is plentiful, economical and easy to fabricate in a variety of shapes and also easy to recycle. A structure built with steel is much lighter than the one built with masonry or concrete. Indeed, some of the structures would have been impossible to build without steel.
As others pointed out, you can paint steel, or you can build "stuff" from weathering steel. In that case you use slightly heavier sections and allow it to weather (rust.) The rust is cosmetic, but it protects the steel underneath from further corrosion. The slight additional cost of using a little more steel is more than offset by not having to paint the structure over its lifespan.Source(s): Over 30 years of experience in heavy construction.

Most things are made out of steel, iron is used when it needs to be resist to shock and vibration. You can get coatings that stops it from corroding like paints or zinc.
It's also cheaper than most comparable metals.
