Was beating your kids up normal and acceptable in the US in the 19th century?

Pretty much. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) law didn't come into effect until January 31, 1974. The US still hasn't ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In the 1800's? Yes, beating kids was both normal and acceptable ... "Spare the rod, spoil the child" was a common saying at the time. You BEAT kids into behaving, whether you were a parent, a teacher, or an employer.

Totally normal then. It was even written that children should be beaten regularly even if they did nothing wrong in order to build character.
