In a given population of men and women, 30% of the men are married and 40% of the women are married. What percentage of the adult population is married? Assume that in this particular population the number of married men is the same as the number of married women.

0.3 * m = 0.4 * w
3m = 4w
m = (4/3) * w
m + w = (4/3) * w + w = (7/3) * w
(0.3m + 0.4w) / ((7/3) * w) =>
(0.4w + 0.4w) * 3 / (7w) =>
3 * 0.8 * w / (7 * w) =>
2.4 / 7
2.4 * 100 / 7 =>
238/7 + 2/7 =>
34 + 0.29 =>

Not enough information... Men and women many not be married...

If this is an old question, also assume that each man is married to exactly one woman. There is insufficient information to solve if one person can marry several others, or same-sex marriage is possible.
m = number of men
w = number of women
c = number of married couples
 c = 0.3m
 c = 0.4w
 4c = 1.2m ; multiplied  by 4
 3c = 1.2w ; multiplied  by 3
 4c + 3c = 1.2m + 1.2w ; added  and
 7c = 1.2 (m+w)
 c = 1.2 / 7 * (m+w)
 c = 120/7 % * (m+w) ; converted to percent by multiplying by 100
 c = 17 1/7 % * (m+w)
So the number of couples is 17 1/7 % of the total number of people (m+w). BUT WAIT. Each couple is 2 people (see assumption above), so double the value to 34 2/7 % of the population being married.

(30 + 40)%/2 = 35%

In a given population of men and women,
30% of the men are married and 40% of the women are married.
What percentage of the adult population is married?
Assume that in this particular population
the number of married men is the same as
the number of married women.
Assume the number of married men equals 100 and
the number of married women also equals 100.
Then the number of married men and women is 70.
Hence 35% of the adult population is married.

Let's say the number of married couples is 12. Then there are a total of 40 men and a total of 30 women. The percent of the adults who are married is
24/70 = 34.3%.
(The answer is independent of the actual number of persons in the population. I chose a small number to make the calculation easy.)
