Can I travel to Japan at this time during Covid-19 ?

I'm American so can I travel there or is it still restricted until further notice ?

    Sadly, no. Unless you are also a Japanese citizen or have resident permission in Japan, you can't enter the country due to Covid-19.

    Let's hope it will be safe to travel again soon!

    No, you cannot go yet. Japan is closed to a number of countries including the US and Canada.

    Other countries don't want American tourists right now.

    Only if you meet 1 of 2 conditions. Japan is only allowing people into the country if they:

    1) Are Japanese citizens wanting to return from abroad.

    2) Foreign nationals (including US citizens) who have legal residents status AND have a re-entry permit BEFORE they leave Japan, else they will be denied entry once they leave even if they have something like permanent resident status.

    Notice there is no provision for tourists wanting to visit Japan.

    Unless you already hold a long-term visa, entry into Japan is still restricted. And having a long term visa is still no guarantee that they'll let you back in. If you are allowed in, there's a mandatory testing and 14 day quarantine, too.
