Ignore the haters... it is named after Jacques "Hudson" Cartier.  He went by his nickname.  See, he had this thing for Kate Hudson.  Go Figger.

No.  The river named after Jacques Cartier is the Jacques-Cartier River.

    But good guess!

I assume that it is named after the Englishman, Hudson, whose name also graces Hudson Bay in Canada.

How could an English name come from a Frenchman?

How would that even make sense?

"The river is named after Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Dutch East India Company, who explored it in 1609, and after whom Hudson Bay in Canada is also named."

Close, but not quite. It's named for Louis Francois Cartier, founder of the famous Cartier jewelry shop in New York City. The explorer, Jacques, was his grandson.
