What are the benefits of a fluid being directed into the pointy end of a meshed cone rather than into the open/diameter end of a meshed cone?

Update:

In this case, the cone is oriented in a horizontal direction, with the flow of the fluid being directed as such.

The pointed end has the smaller surface area, so the material collected will blind that area first. But as new material comes in, it will collect down the sides of the cone with an increasing cross sectional surface area.  This keeps the pressure drop through the cone from increasing drastically as it collects more material, allowing the time for cleaning to be anticipated.

Trash being filtered out will end up around the large circular end of the screen.
