do most apartments in suburbs have thin walls?

for example in my house growing up as a kid, i could hear people walking around, running, and talking in the nearby bedrooms.

are most apartments in the suburbs well insulated so you don't hear neighbors and people in hallways?

i'd be living in chicago south west suburbs if that matters.

It depends on how well the building is constructed and what it's made of.

Many apartments are mainly wood, meaning you'll most likely hear your neighbors.

I live in a building that is made of steel and concrete with 12 inches between the floor of one unit and the ceiling of the one below. I rarely hear anything from other units.

Most apartments in general have thin walls regardless of location. Some of the high end places may be better constructed but even that is no gurantee.

Not thin, really. Just poorly insulated interior walls.
