Why do so many people enjoy rumors and gossip when all it does is cause trouble and ruin self esteem?

The Germans have a name for this human behaviour- schadenfreude: some people truly relish in the struggles of others.

Gossip is based on insecurities and immaturity. It gives people a false sense of feeling better about themselves. Kind of pathetic, really.

Eleanor Roosevelt had a saying that stuck with many people back in her day:  "Brilliant people talk about goals, dreams, and visions about how to make the world better for everyone, ordinary people discuss the weather and world politics, and small-minded people talk about other people because they can't think of anything else about which to talk".  That saying hasn't gone out of style.

It depends what you mean by "gossip". Of course it can lead to unhappy results when people exchange mean-minded rumours. But if I hear that a neighbour is ill, and pass the word on to another neighbour who may be able to help them, that's not harmful, that's just communicating.

Some people likely find gossip a source of entertainment, while others may enjoy bonding with someone over the assumption and speculation.  Some people like to gossip as a way distracting themselves from their own lives and/or to mask their own insecurities.  Remember, we often judge in others what we do not like about ourselves.

Not going to the Source is the original sin. Gossip is a sin in the purest sense of the word.
